A keyframe defines the starting and ending points of any animation on a sequence ; A key-frame marks the point where you you want to add an effect or transition. The key frame is important because it allows for smooth and clear transitions

Select the clip or image you would like to animate look above the timeline there you will see a box select; the Effects Control Window tab.In the Effects Control window you will see the timeline here you select where you want to key the video that is select a point for an animated move ( rotation, scale, position etc) then move it and continue until desired effects are added .
Note to select and and effect to clip or image by key-framing you select the diamond icon this marks the point for the effect and you can see where that effect will occur.
