Script
Host: Today on the So can I! show, our featured guest is nineteen year old Barbadian supermodel,; Nia Alleyne from the Elite model management. Nia is a very special young lady, at a very young age, she was diagnosed with a rare disease, which will make her totally blind at the age of thirty, however this young lady has a determined spirit which has placed her where she is today, in the Elite model management, among supermodels such as Alex Grace, Alejandro Gonzalez, just to name a few. So Nia, it's nice to have you on the show.
Nia: It's nice to be here. (smiles)
Host: I'm glad to be in the presence of someone such as yourself, so first, I and I'm sure the many viewers would like you to tell us a little about yourself. How has being a supermodel for such a respected modelling agency been for you even with your disability?
Nia: It's been such a wonderful experience, starting out as an aspiring model is a challenge for anyone in the field, but doing it with a disability is even harder, because it involves doing a bit more than the others. But my goal is much stronger than my disadvantage, and that's why I'm still in the running.
Host: So what are some of the challenges that you do have, as a disabled model?
Nia: ummm, it would have to be walking the runway (laughs), I know that's probably every model's biggest fear and the most challenging, but for me, after getting over the nervousness, my problem was mainly because of my sight, and not being familiar with the many runways out there, so I had to do extra, like come the day before to feel out the place, so there wouldn't be any mess ups on that day.
Host: OK, I see, on television, it portrays models as being somewhat mean (says mean in quotations) to their counterparts, did this ever affect?
Nia: Of course(nods for inficise), I mean there were times, especially when I was starting up in the business, some were like, "checka d blind girl, where she think she going? bet she fall off stage, "(laughs). I mean, at that point I wasn't laughing, but I was smiling in my head, and that just drove me to prove them wrong and prove myself right; now I can laugh at it openly, but it did hurt me; that's life for you, I guess.
Host: (nods in agreement) Yes, you will always get that, old, young, disabled, not disabled, persons will always try to push you down. So moving on to your disease, can you talk to us about it, to help us to understand it better. I know the name is Retinis Pigmentoso, and it is a genetic disease, how have you dealt with this though you years?
Nia: It's been very tough, not going to lie, yes, it is genetic, my grandpa and my mum, have all had variations of it. So there was always a chance of me developing it, therefore pre cautions have always been taken to slow the process. I think what worried me the most, were the simple things, like seeing the sunset, reading, watching television, it was never really about what other persons would say, it was about what I couldn't do. Just like everything else in life, I took the positives from it, and learnt a new language,(laugh)....
Host: What was that?
Nia: Braille.(says it with a very serious tone)
Nia and Skyee have a moment of laughing hysterically.
Host: Nia I can see why you are so lovable, you have used your disability to your ability and you should be proud of that, you are definitely an inspiration for younger persons, both with and without disabilities, and you should continue to be that way. Anything you would like to say, before we end?
Nia: Well I would just like to say to the youth, continue to work at your dream, life will come with trials, but always remember you are not the only person going through that trial, be friends with persons who will motivate you to always look up, and in return motivate those around you, never be a follower, unless you are leading from behind.
Host: Thank you Nia for being here, it has been a pleasure talking to you. To all of you fashion fans out there, check out E!
